Drive for 75 – A Great Success!
By Joel Weinberger
On Sunday, June 26th, Continental Motors of Naperville sponsored and hosted the 6th Annual “Drive for 75” Race to End Homelessness at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL. This fun charity event is a 4-hour team endurance karting race. This year, we had 11 teams competing off-track to reach a goal of $75,000 in fundraising for DuPagePads. Once race day arrived, the teams competed on-track in a test of driving endurance, strategy, and skill.
While the weather forecast had threatened stormy weather for our race day, it miraculously turned out to be dry and extremely hot. Teams were placed into one of three classes based on karting experience (Pro, Sportsman or Rookie). The on-track battles within each class were fierce all race long, with many of the final positions decided in the last 30 minutes of the race. Pit strategy and driver changes are always critically important to a good race result.
Team Continental Racing earned its first-ever overall win with the driver team of Continental dealership owner Joel Weinberger, his two sons Aidan and Kellan, and Ben Ficht. The Sportsman Class victory was earned by Team First Trust – Cash and Carey. Their captain, Bob Carey, was the driving force behind having their team also finish 1st in fundraising with over $15,000 collected. Thank you First Trust! The Rookie Class was won by a team made up of members of the DuPage Pads Board of Directors, plus some help from an experienced racer, Lauren Bruski. Fellow Board member Lou Holland provided the leadership and strategy for that team.
There were also two additional teams from Continental, comprised mostly of service and parts employees from the Continental Ferrari dealership in Hinsdale along with Chris Papo from Acura. The more experienced team, Scuderia Sei, finished 2nd in the Sportsman Class. The other team, Meow Meow, learned a lot and hopes to come back and compete for a class win next year.
In the end, everyone enjoyed some great racing and camaraderie while also learning a bit more about how DuPagePads is making an impact on the problem of homelessness. Even more importantly, the event reached its fundraising goal by collecting $75,747 in donations. Over the past 6 years, the Drive for 75 has now raised over $475,000 for DuPagePads! Thanks to all the drivers, supporters, staff, and Autobahn County Club for helping make it happen!
